What is P2P?

P2P is a computer network structure that relies primarily on the computing power and bandwidth of the participants in the network rather than concentrating it in a relatively low number of servers. Different from traditional Client-Server architecture in which all the clients retrieve data from the server, in P2P architecture peers can retrieve data from other clients. In a P2P network, peers provide bandwidth, storage space, and computing power. Thus, as nodes arrive and demand on the system increases, the total capacity of the system also increases. This is not true in Client-Server architecture with a fixed set of servers, in which adding more clients could slow down data transfer for all users. With P2P technology, the burden of the server is greatly reduced and large-scale online videos distribution is achieved.
  • From the server's perspective, a P2P network can reduce the burden of the server.
  • From the client's perspective, a P2P network can increase the download speed.
  • For the whole system, as peers arrive and demand on the system increases, the total capacity of the system also increases.
